In the antique shop, these shabby but compelling vintage posters were labelled simply “WWI.” There was no provenance to prove it, but little reason to doubt it, and I took them home. Online research turned up another copy of the print, which maintained a printer’s mark and a date of 1917, so the posters do indeed date from the early days of U.S. involvement in the war. The words “GIVE!” and “LEND!” were often used in the various campaigns to fund the war effort: a propaganda appeal to a shared commitment.

The simple one-word exhortations on these prints immediately reminded me of 21st-century social media, although the comparison was not flattering. Scanning an Instagram feed of an artist’s labors, it’s common to see tossed-off comments like “LOVE!” or “FIRE!”, “WANT!” or “NEED!” Especially taken in bulk, such effusive praise strikes me as a distressingly superficial kind of engagement. I suppose shallow art criticism is largely harmless. But this frantic model of connection is not unique to the cultural sphere. In the realm of electoral politics, social justice, or international warfare, the media we use to connect seem to offer us so much, but require so little.

&#60;img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f42a1c2b966a5897390146699d13c1009e4fbcbd09d6be3ee1a00b9d22678119/small-install-view.jpg" data-mid="157097525" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f42a1c2b966a5897390146699d13c1009e4fbcbd09d6be3ee1a00b9d22678119/small-install-view.jpg" /&#62;My own posters, screen-printed in glittery inks the color of loose change, are scattered in proximity to these hundred-year-old broadsides. In this time, I find myself with more questions than answers, and this project represents a slight departure: less a polemic satire, and more a poetic rumination on discourse, sacrifice, and the binding agents of society.</description>

Inspired by a True Story: the double meaning of the phrase “Big Deal” struck me while driving past a local mattress store, where of late the signage in the windows had seemed increasingly desperate, even tragic. It seemed that the store had turned into its own worst critic, making its own advertisements into trollish, self-loathing&#38;nbsp;comments. These straightforward posters are installed in an over-enthusiastic grid, with one crumpled, sad example allowed to point out the futility of the pleading text. &#38;nbsp;

	Meme Problem/Le Même Problème

screenprints, variable installation

Reinterpreting propaganda posters of the “Atelier Populaire,” produced in 1968 by student demonstrators in Paris, this project interrogates the culture of communication enabled by the Internet, and demonstrates how new digital technologies mirror the historic evolution of print technologies. These original posters were created in a fast-paced collaboration, in direct response to the events of the day. The posters’ anxious character and immediate aesthetic echo the culture of the social media memes prevalent in our present-day political climate. Half a century later, I revisit these works to reflect on the limits and possibilities of persuasive discourse. The struggle continues.

Blotto

digital and screenprint, 2016

These are images of crushed bottle caps that I gathered one day from an alley that lies between a somewhat unsavory&#38;nbsp;tavern&#38;nbsp;and the place where I worked for many years. The regulars who frequent this&#38;nbsp;tavern&#38;nbsp;became a part of my life, but only at a curious remove: I could hear them while working, but couldn't see them or speak to them. I lived my life in parallel to the clientele of this bar, but only in physical proximity. In all other ways, we formed no connection. My excursion into the alley to gather these caps was, perhaps, a form of non-interventionist engagement.

The inscrutable rebuses I printed on these images evoke the puzzles printed inside bottle caps of National Bohemian beer (a local favorite). Those rebuses are poorly designed, printed badly, impossible to interpret, utterly forgettable, and yet they are an absolute delight. Whether blurry-eyed or clear-headed, one must seek the counsel of others to determine even remotely plausible guesses at the "answer" of a bottle cap rebus. In that small way, these small printed failures offer a sense of community, even in a lonely place like that small, sad tavern that is so close, yet so far away. &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

These abstractions are digitally manipulated photographs of Andy Warhol. Adobe Photoshop’s "content-aware fill" feature is largely responsible for the curious ”aesthetic" of these images, which holds an odd connection to traditional print language (despite being created in a digital workspace by an algorithm, the lines resemble fingerprints, or magnified images of wood engravings). The images themselves are engaging to me because in their beautiful, anodyne abstraction there are moments of real resonance: they resemble ocean waves, mountain ranges, etc. Turning over the composition of the images to a computer was a conscious choice, as was sourcing the portraits from the Internet with little attention paid to the authority of the images. These choices dissociated the work from my own voice as an artist, and allowed me to interrogate a cool, detached model of making art that is largely foreign to me, but widely prevalent (a model of which Warhol is a progenitor). Warhol didn't live to see Adobe Photoshop, but just imagine if he had.
The title of the portfolio references an R.E.M. lyric which is about a different Andy altogether. But Andys Kaufman and Warhol both embodied the same trickster spirit, so I borrowed the phrase anyway.

Hung from a flag pole, they present a signal of dire distress, a lament for a country allowed to fall free, a living thing destroyed in an undignified way. &#38;nbsp;Installed at STNDRD in St. Louis, MO.

This installation consists of empty cardboard containers imprinted with a series of weak propositions for self-improvement. These “suggestion boxes” evoke the the equally empty advice that typifies the banal social chatter we use to avoid discussion of larger issues.

miscellaneous printed promotional materials

Installed at a local private school, Fearful Symmetry presents merchandise from the (fictitious) William Blake Academy for Boys’ Spirit Shop. These printed promotional materials absurdly juxtapose the passionate zeal of sports fandom with the earnest fervor of the Romantic poet.
